My Problem Solving Story
I have experienced many situations where I recognized the way I thrive in complicated situations that require problem solving skills. One example is an issue that happened at my workplace a few weeks back. I started my shift, and noticed my coworker was not her normal self. I went to check on her and identify the issue that was causing her to feel not so well, and she broke it down to me that she initially was supposed to finish at 6:00PM, and it was 5:54PM at the time, but apparently our supervisor was “forcing her to stay back after 6:00PM to clean the kitchen drying rack”. She really exaggerated her stress and truthfully was saying certain things that I felt like were unnecessary and were just spoken out of anger, and right in the midst of that, our supervisor overheard and walked in. At this point, I knew that an even bigger issue were to arise and I was correct, my coworker and my supervisor began to argue back and fourth, one claiming that she was forced to stay back while the other said I never told you to stay back I just said to clean it. I then tried my best to de-escalate the situation. I explained to my coworker that she shouldn’t have made rude comments about my supervisor when explaining the situation to me and not to speak out of anger, and explained to my supervisor that for future time long tasks , to make sure to assign it to a worker that still has an hour or more on the clock, so they are not rushed and it is finished effectively. They both understood, and apologized to each other. This situation was a tricky one because it wasn’t about who is wrong and who is right, but more about helping fix the communication barrier and emotions. I used my problem solving skills to de-escalate the situation, and help both come to understanding of one another.
My Numeracy Goal
Based on my results from the Skills Assessment, a skill I would like to expand on for the next four weeks is “Numeracy”. The way I will do this is by scheduling 3 time slots a week for practicing mathematical and functions online tutoring.
